MetalRecusants are proud to officially reveal to you the brand new debut album Coils of Entropy from the rising extreme metal tyrants Nephelium. In Dave’s (our devoted contributor and heavy metal veteran) words: “Nothing negative can be said about a band that has endured so much and come so far. This is a solid debut release and definitely worth adding to my collection and yours.” The album is set for release on the 7th February 2012. Hopefully by that time you will stream it, headbang to it, love it and purchase it!

Dave: I read online that the band originated in Dubai – what’s the metal scene like out there?
Nephelium: Yes, we originated in the United Arab Emirates in Dubai in the late 90s. There, we started making a name for ourselves and are very proud to say that we were one of the first extreme metal acts to make it out there, and helped forge the local scene in Dubai. The scene was miniature when it kicked off in the early 90s, but since Dubai has always been metropolitan, there were a lot of kids who brought in metal from around the world and shared it with others who had no access to it.
Now a successful scene, the U.A.E. has had the privilege of hosting some of the world’s most renowned international metal bands.
Dave: How does it compare to your current scene in Toronto?
Nephelium: Well, North America in general has always had a much more established scene in comparison to the scene in Dubai. Toronto is now home for us, however, having said that, it was a challenge and a half for us re-establishing ourselves in a new continent let alone country. But at the end of the day, hard work pays off! :)
Dave: Where did you get the name Nephelium from?
Nephelium: Nephelium, as referred to in the King James Version of the bible, were beings of superior genetic composition, often giants, and were the offspring of fallen angels from the heavens and women from Earth. This cross-breed species, down the generations, is believed to have resulted in the human beings that we are today, with our flaws and sins.
Similar references are made in different religions, and it is easy to make the hypothesis that these stories were actually primitive retellings of visitors from another planet fucking up with the DNA of apes to create mankind. This theme speaks to us all as we blend together religion and technology to tell stories and write music from different perspectives around this central concept. Whatever religion you believe in, there’s something within that will peak your interest, and we truly believe that every metal head on this planet became metal heads because they are subconsciously aware of their “inner power” for every metal head is a descendant of the Nephelium!!!
Dave: How long has the current lineup been playing together?
Nephelium: Over 2 years now.
Dave: What’s the best part of being a member of a metal band?
Nephelium: Apart from being part of a genre of music that requires continuous hard work (which is something we thrive on) and perseverance (which is something we live by) to be accepted and heard amongst the masses, we eat, sleep, breathe and live METAL!!!
Dave: The lyrics are brutally evil, who writes them? What influences the subject matter?
Nephelium: The lyrics were written based on the concept of the album by the band as a whole. Boyan, our ex – vocalist was responsible for most of the lyrical content of this album.
Dave: Your music incorporates a lot of different styles, can you name some groups that have influence your music?
Nephelium: Over the years, a lot of bands such as Death, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Obituary, Aeon, Deeds of Flesh, Spawn of Possession, Kronos, Cynic, Pestilence, Bolt Thrower, Testament, Decapitated, Dream Theater, etc have had an influence on us. The list is endless!
Dave: Have you ever played a show with another band that was a major influence?
Nephelium: Sharing the stage with Skinless!!! They were amazing!!!
Dave: I think the debut album rocks, how has the early response been?
Nephelium: We’ve gotten a lotta love and we appreciate it! :D We have been receiving a lot of positive reviews from different zines from all over the globe and the list keeps growing and growing.
Dave: Any interest yet from record labels?
Nephelium: Yessir!!! We are just waiting for the right offer.
Dave: Does the band have any plans to tour in support of the new album?
Nephelium: So far, 2012 is our year and we are definitely planning to go out on the road to tour hard starting this year!!!
Dave: Now that you’ve found some degree of success, will Nephelium bring their music back to Dubai sometime soon?
Nephelium: Yes, Nephelium will go back to where it all began to play and share our success with everyone who supported and believed in us. We’re coming home soon boys, brace yourselves!!!
Dave: Do you have any advice for aspiring musicians?
Nephelium: No matter what it takes, never ever give up!!!
Dave: What are the long term goals of the band?
Nephelium: Our goal is to get exposure, get our music out there, get people to know and like what we do, and connect and interact with as many metal heads as possible all over the world. From the most casual of fans, to the most dedicated people who make a living out of it and every passionate head banger in between. After all, we are all genetic descendants of a superior race (the Nephelium) and are aware of our inner strengths, so let’s all express it in metal…Nephelium style!!!
Dave: Is your hybrid technical style the future of Death Metal?
Nephelium: No one knows the future. However, having said that, as mentioned in previous interviews, we never set boundaries in our music in ANY capacity. With an approach to writing as such, who knows what will come out!
