HELLFEST OPEN AIR: Teams Up With a Porn Site?!

It was announced earlier today on Hellfest Open Air Festival‘s official Facebook page that they have teamed up with a porn website, Le Tag Parfait. The following statement was released along with a video which you can view below:

Le Tag Parfait and Hellfest join forces in a project dedicated to the feminine side of this unprecedented event. Proxy Paige will be our special correspondant there to capture the unique atmosphere of the sexiest metal festival.

UPDATE: IT LOOKS LIKE HELLFEST PULLED THE PLUG ON THIS PARTNERSHIP. STAY TUNED FOR MORE INFORMATION. Evidence: http://rue89.nouvelobs.com/rue89-culture/2014/04/18/sexy-project-plan-pourri-hellfest-festivalieres-251620

This is outrageous. Porn journalists? Approaching women and objectifying them and exploiting for the males’ pleasure? Something which for the “porn journalist” is an “interview”, I guess? I don’t know about you but if I were a woman, I would be outraged. And it is pretty fucking outrageous for me as a male metalhead. It gives the impression that any male metalhead like me goes to a metal festival to look at naked women and their body parts. Which is far from the truth.

It is also doing nothing to help women feel more safe and included at the festival or in the metal scene. Especially the first time female goers who haven’t been to a metal festival before, who are a bit scared of going alone and who do not have too many friends to go with to such events; they will be scared even more. This cooperation and that video is only uplifting any stereotype about metal people being vicious, lustful, sexist animals.

Why are you doing this Hellfest? Metalheads want music, beer and even more music. That should be enough. You do not need to cooperate with a porn site to attract more attention to your event. The lineup is already freaking amazing and your 3-day passes are already sold out.

An appropriate comment has been made by one fan on the festival’s Facebook wall and, in my opinion, it says it all:

What I don’t agree with is the idea of the ‘sexy metal chick’. How is Le Tag Parfait trying to elevate the women at Hellfest? By continuing to label female festival goers as ‘sexy’ it is further encouraging men to view us as objects, as pieces of meat to be ogled. In the video Proxy Paige states that ‘we will exploit sexy metal girls for your enjoyment’, what sort of message is this sending? It appears it is nothing to do with female representation but a porn zine looking to objectify female festival goers based on their looks and how ‘sexy’ they are.

What has this got to do with metal? What place does Le Tag Parfait have at Hellfest? Myself and other female festival goers feel incredibly uncomfortable with the presence of Le Tag Parfait at Hellfest. I do not wish to be approached by this zine or ‘encouraged’ (harrassed) to be ‘sexy’ in any way shape or form. I suggest that if female representation is your aim then you employ a reputable music publication to profile the experiences of female festival goers. A pornographic website has no place at Hellfest. Please refer to your Facebook post announcing the X Girls involvement and you will see over one hundred comments speaking out against this project.
I hope you reconsider their presence at the festival.
