LIKE RATS – II

This isn't a straight up hardcore album, it's still in your face but not constantly. Songs often linger and build up the tension before charging into mosh pit territory where the death metal influence can really be felt.

Featuring two members of the soon-to-be-departed Weekend Nachos, Like Rats are a band I can see taking off in the next few years. Last month they released their second offering (this time on Southern Lord Records which is run by Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) fame). II proves why this band are being talked about and getting press across the Internet.

Like Rats bring something new to the already full table of hardcore. They present it with a death metal assault which will no doubt make the band stand out from the crowd. Think Weekend Nachos but with a death metal twist and a vocalist who sounds like the offspring of Obituary and Vader. Opening with a foreboding riff and a cymbal crash, ‘From Beyond’ kicks off the album in style while setting the tone for the release. This isn’t a straight up hardcore album, it’s still in your face but not constantly. Songs often linger and build up the tension before charging into mosh pit territory where the death metal influence can really be felt.

What also can be felt is the anger and torment on the album, such as the frantic guitar solo on ‘Immortal Coil’. The sound is very stripped back, bare-bones hardcore with a strong death metal base. My main issue with the album is that at parts while consistently good, it has a tendency to become predictable and repetitive. Ending the album on a piano outro was a confusing move also, finishing the album with feedback ringing from a savage breakdown would perhaps have been more fitting. But despite the criticism, this is a great second album from a young, energetic band to be hopeful about.

It may not be a masterpiece, but Like Rats have made a tight album that will win them fans in the death metal, hardcore and powerviolence circles.

Best Tracks: ‘From Beyond,’ ‘Gates,’ and ‘Immortal Coil’.

About Jack (766 Articles)
I am a recent graduate from the University of Essex in Colchester where by the luck of Odin I met the editor, Dom. I first got into metal when I was 13 and now I am 22 and own an uncountable amount of band T-shirts. I also regularly attend gigs (local and in neighbouring areas) as well as festivals. My musical taste is varied; I like nu metal (my first love), thrash, black, death, doom, folk, sludge (my favourite genre), symphonic and many more of the multiple genres that metal has to offer, I even like some metalcore (I know it's a dirty word within some metal circles but some of it is outstanding). One of my most memorable metal moments was meeting Grand Magus at the Bloodstock signing tent and having the whole tent to myself, spending a few minutes talking to them.
