Andy Copping of DOWNLOAD FESTIVAL Claims Women “Haven’t Felt Inspired Enough to Pick up a Guitar or Be the Singer of a Rock Band”

In a recent Guardian article analysing the number of women appearing at music festivals, Download Festival promoter Andy Copping was quoted claiming the following:

There’s no shortage of women coming to our festival, but they seem to like watching bands more than being in them. They just haven’t felt inspired enough to pick up a guitar or be the singer of a rock band.

Females have been rocking out in bands ever since the 1920s and the Blues Women. Then we had great acts such as Jefferson Airplane, The Runaways, Girlschool, Poison Girls, Lita Ford and in the 90s with grunge and the riot grrrl movement: L7 (who actually played Download Festival this year), Hole and Sleater-Kinney among many others. In the 21st Century, we have modern bands such as Arch Enemy, Within Temptation, Blues Pills, Butcher Babies, Huntress, Nervosa, Electric Wizard, Black Moth and many other bands with female members literally rocking out.

Perhaps, the problem is not that there aren’t enough bands with females in them. Perhaps, the problem is that the music industry – including festival promoters, PRs, press and record labels – does not give enough emphasis on the female talent present in the rock and metal world. And tagging it as “female-fronted” metal/rock does not help.

Below this awesome old-school picture of Girlschool, there is a list of around 100 bands who have female members and could possibly perform at your festival.

About Dom (1261 Articles)
I started this website in 2011 because I always had a burning passion of sharing music and keeping people informed about what's going on in the metal and rock worlds. If I am not sitting in a dark room in front of a computer, listening to some obscure music (or Whitesnake), then I am usually found at a concert or a festival interviewing bands (or drinking beer).
