Sümer are one of the country’s best bands. A confident, mesmerising live act as shown by their live performance at Bloodstock. As soon as this tour was announced, I jumped at the chance and four months later I was queuing outside the venue and waiting for the band.
Agent opened the show with a set that was a firm start to the show. Full of strong tech metal riffs, a commanding presence on stage and likeable band members, Agent were a great opening act. Based on the size of the crowd for the opener and the reaction, Agent have a bright future ahead of them.
For the Oracle were the most progressive band on the line-up, featuring a sound that was truly their own. Their saxophone player added a new layer to their sound and did not muddle the mix or detract from the other talented musicians on stage. For the Oracle’s song however did have a tendency to drag on, despite this they were a great addition to the night.
Brutai are a band I had heard a lot about in 2016, they seemed to be everywhere, at all the festivals, in all the magazines and websites and even on TV. One look at their set made me realise why – they were incredible. Opener ‘Relapse’ from their brilliant album Born kicked things off in a grand fashion, a fearless and positive manner. It was a statement that this band meant business and were here to stay. The mixture of old and new material went down well and despite the newer material coming off stronger, no song was a blank from this revolver. ‘Deep’ and ‘Flood’ were particular highlights. The band proved that the hype was justified.
All acts paled in comparison to the mighty Sümer. They received a hero’s welcome on stage by a rammed venue, a whirlwind of well-crafted riffs and beautiful vocals which created a unique atmosphere. Playing material from The Animal You Are as well as some heavier and faster new material, the band put on a show that had to be seen to be believed. Islington witnessed five talented musicians play some beautiful music and make their scene proud; with the band going into mainland Europe this year, it won’t be long before Europe and then the world will be conquered.
