Battle Beast – Bringer of Pain

Boasting a slick production, catchy melodies, and powerful vocals, Bringer of Pain is a commendable record.

Finnish troupe Battle Beast recently unleashed their fourth full-length, Bringer of Pain. While the music may be considered straight up heavy metal, the band injects thrash and power metal elements into the fold as well. In ten well-crafted tracks, the group proves they should be turning more heads.

The LP is carried by singer Noora Louhimo, who wields some serious pipes. She sounds like an even more metal Lzzy Hale. The vocalist is beautiful when she needs to be, and wicked when the situation calls for it. Most of the tracks follow the typical verse-course-verse procedure, but done with such precise tact and strong writing. They are usually epic, upbeat chants of might, but there is definitely variety.

Tracks of note include “King for a Day,” which gave me Dio and Iron Maiden vibes. “Familiar Hell” tackles the subject of modern media, but maintains the lively vibe. “Dancing with the Beast” is essentially an electronic song, but somehow fits within the continuity of the record. The darkest track, “Lost in Wars” is my favorite for sure. Featuring Tomi Joutsen of Amorphis, the main riff backed with intense keys feels like the soundtrack to WWIII. The record ends with “Far From Heaven,” a fairly by-the-numbers ballad, though still entertaining.

Boasting a slick production, catchy melodies, and powerful vocals, Bringer of Pain is a commendable record. I’m not usually into modern radio-friendly music, but damn this is undeniably an enjoyable album in the purest sense of the word. I didn’t know about Battle Beast before, but they are for sure on my radar now.
