The Comfortable Low is the newest EP from Swedish sludge post-metal band The Moth Gatherer released by Agonia Records in March 2017. The album opens with the track ‘This Providence of Bones’, a track which amiably combines post-metal with electronic elements. The track develops its emotional atmosphere with passionate guitar melodies, ardent vocals, and a stunning electronic backing. The midpoint of the track includes a peaceful moment of futuristic-sounding calm, supplied by gentle vocals and soft electronics; both of which slowly build up to return to the main chorus. The final section of the song features a slightly heavier sound, complete with harsher vocals to tie the track off.
The second – and final – track, ‘Still Life Slumbers Here’, opens with calm riffing which slowly enthralls the listener as it continues to get louder, and is shortly joined by drums before the instrumentation then becomes more aggressive. The midpoint of the track includes the more aggressive instrumentation with both soft and harsh vocals, as well as powerful instrumentals which lead us into the final section of the track. The track ends with the music becoming softer, and slowly fading out with a very relaxing, calm melody to neatly close the EP.
Overall, the album, while short, is a fun EP worth checking out for fans of post-metal or the like – bands such as Rosetta or Cult of Luna.
